Translucent Porcelain
Translucent Porcelain is a refined mid-fire porcelain that becomes luminous and light-transmitting when thrown or rolled thin. Fired in our electric oxidation kilns at Cone 6, it develops a smooth, vitrified, glass-like surface.
This clay is exceptionally smooth and contains no grog, making it ideal for delicate throwing, detailed carving, and refined handbuilt forms. It performs beautifully with celadons and translucent glazes that enhance its natural luminosity.
Firing: Cone 6 (electric oxidation)
Average Shrinkage: ~14.2%
Absorption Rate: ~0.07%
Texture: Ultra smooth, no grog
With approximately 14% shrinkage, porcelain reduces significantly from wet to fired state. Plan carefully for fitted forms and precise measurements.
At 0.07% absorption, this clay vitrifies extremely tightly at Cone 6, producing strong, dense functional ware when properly glazed and fired.
Porcelain requires slower drying and careful compression to reduce cracking and warping.
All clay fired in the studio must be purchased through Heart & Hearth to maintain firing consistency and protect kiln integrity.
